Be prepared to enjoy the Solar Eclipse
As you’ve heard, the Solar Eclipse is coming on August 21 and much of the Willamette Valley is in the path of totality. In anticipation of the nearly one million people visiting Oregon that day, we will delay opening our branches and Corporate Center until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 21.
We are doing this in an abundance of caution for the safety of our members and our staff, as predictions show that the influx of people to the area may cause standstill traffic and congestion. This means that first responders and law enforcement may have difficulty getting to emergencies, thus heightening safety and security concerns. We want to do all we can to protect you and our members.
Please be sure to visit us before August 21 for any of your banking needs. It is also a good idea to visit the ATM and take out any cash you may need prior to the weekend. You may also access your accounts 24/7 through Internet Banking and the MyOCCU Mobile app.
As you prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime event and the influx of visitors coming to Oregon, we wanted to share some tips with you:
- Be prepared:
- Make sure your gas tanks are full
- Grocery shop a couple of days ahead of time
- Fill any necessary prescriptions
- Know there will be long lines when eating out
- Take out cash ahead of time
- Visit OCCU the week before
- Use Internet Banking and MyOCCU Mobile to access your accounts
- Safety glasses: The only safe way to view the eclipse is through solar filter glasses that have been certified to meet the ISO standard requirements. These can be purchased at a variety of locations.
- Crime prevention: There are a lot of people expected to visit Oregon. Be aware of your surroundings and keep the items you carry with you and in your car at a minimum to avoid being a target for theft.
- Family safety: Large crowds bring a higher risk of kids getting lost or separated from their families. This is a great time to revisit your family safety plan.
- Pets: Be sure you have supplies for your pets on hand.
- Traffic: It is anticipated that there will be a high volume of traffic on the days leading up to and the days after the eclipse.
- Be patient
- Give yourself extra time to reach your destination
- Keep your travel to a minimum
- Clean up: Wherever you choose to view the eclipse, be respectful and pack out anything you bring in.
